Glaucoma is popularly known as eye pressure. It is a type of treatment used in the destruction of the eye nerves caused by increased pressure in the eye. Aqueous fluid, which is normally present in the eye, disappears over time. In the discomfort of eye pressure, this causes a small obstruction that is invisible to the eye as the eye fluid flows out. This obstruction increases eye pressure and causes damage to the visual nerves.

There are no clear signs of this eye problem. It is noticed by chance in eye number measurements that are visited regularly. However, glaucoma can be diagnosed when visiting the doctor with complaints such as eye blurring, feeling the eye hard and reddening of the eyes. Glaucoma is often seen in older age groups.

How is Glaucoma Treated?

Glaucoma is treated by lowering the pressure inside the eye. However, additional measures should be taken to reduce the pressure. Regulation of hypertension and the execution of certain laser procedures are among these additional measures. The aim of the treatment is to prevent and stop the damage of the visual nerve and repair the damage that occurs if possible. Treatment started with eye drops is followed by OCT.

If any deterioration is seen, new drugs are given. If the drugs do not work, surgical procedures are applied this time. Laser is not preferred in the treatment of glaucoma. Experts can resort to personalized treatments. Treatment is directed according to the side effects that may occur in patients. With these two methods defined as SLT and ALT, eye pressure is lowered for a certain period of time. Laser, on the other hand, if all these applications are not a solution, laser treatment is applied.

Glaucoma treatment lasts lifelong. There is also no herbal solution. Thanks to lifelong used drugs, vision loss is not observed in the patient. In short, eye pressure can prevent blindness, but it is not a simple disorder that can be corrected by using medication.

Who is at Risk of Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is usually seen in older age groups. Glaucoma can also be inherited. For this reason, if the elders of the family have eye pressure, it is recommended that children and grandchildren go for regular check-ups. Diabetes is also one of the serious disorders affecting glaucoma. Just as diabetes is a disorder with an inherited predisposition, glaucoma that develops with this disease can also be inherited.

It should be taken into account that people who cannot see clearly and are hit in the eye may also have eye pressure. In such cases, a doctor can be consulted considering the possibility of eye pressure.

Individuals who use cortisone for a long time are also likely to have eye pressure.

Glaucoma treatment should not be delayed. The sooner a diagnosis is made, the more successful treatment is applied and the progression of the disease is slowed down. Damage caused by eye pressure is irreversible. This is because the nerve tissue cannot renew itself.
