Obesity is one of the most common health problems in recent years. Obesity is not only a weight-related condition but also the cause of endocrine-based diseases. For this reason, gastric surgeries are one of the most common procedures for weight loss and increasing living standards. Gastric bypass procedure is applied in the treatment of obesity. Gastric Bypass is a name for the surgical treatment of obesity, and it is also popularly known as stomach reduction. Gastric bypass procedure is applied by specialist doctors according to the necessary clinical follow-up, tests and results, taking into account the wishes of individuals.
How is Gastric Bypass Procedure Performed?
Gastric bypass procedure is performed by laparoscopic methods. With the advancement of technology, the surgical procedure is performed with 4-6 holes opened with a diameter of 1 cm thanks to robotic surgery. Just like in sleeve gastrectomy operations, a large part of the stomach, such as 95%, is bypassed in gastric bypass application. A certain part of the stomach is divided into two with the surgical application, and the 12-finger intestine is bypassed. After this procedure, the stomach is attached to the middle of the 12-finger intestine. As a result of this procedure, food is prevented from passing through the 12-finger intestine. With gastric bypass surgery, it is ensured that it is saturated with less food, and only a part of this food is absorbed.
What is the Postoperative Process?
After the surgery, what the specialist doctor says should be followed. When it is recommended to drink 1.5-2 liters of water, and this amount is not consumed, negative situations such as dizziness, nausea and dark urine may occur. Care should be taken to avoid such problems. Care should also be taken not to lift heavy during the first six weeks after the operation. Individuals with a light work life can return to work 2-3 weeks after the operation. However, this period may be longer for individuals with heavy working conditions.
How Should Nutrition Be After Gastric Bypass Surgery?
Attention should be paid to nutrition after surgery. Liquid foods should be taken in the first two weeks, and solid foods should be taken in puree consistency in the 3-4-5th weeks. It is recommended not to consume both dry and liquid foods together. If you want to use milk for protein, soy or skim milk should be used. Low-fat dietary milk puddings, mashed potatoes and cereals prepared with milk, as well as alternative foods such as cottage cheese, omelettes and crushed fish can be consumed. Foods such as fresh bread, pure meat, is it meat, fruit, oranges and rice should be avoided. Drink a minimum of 1.5-2 liters of water a day. It is important to ensure that you eat three good meals daily. Protein, vegetables, fruits and whole wheat grain groups should be consumed. The feeding process should be stopped when saturation is felt.
